How court fees work in India

Court fee is the statutory fee payable when a plaint, petition or appeal is filed. Each state has its own Court Fees Act — most southern states follow the ad valorem (value-based) slab pattern of the Court Fees and Suits Valuation Act, 1956, while fixed fees apply to writs, matrimonial petitions and similar proceedings.

Paying deficit court fee can get a plaint returned under Order VII Rule 11 CPC, so getting the figure right before filing matters. This calculator shows the full slab-wise working and cites the schedule and article it applies.
