Landlord increased rent by 50% without notice in Mumbai, can he do this?

I've been living in a rented apartment in Mumbai for the past 2 years. Suddenly, last month, my landlord informed me that he is increasing the rent by 50% from next month. This increase was without any prior notice, and I only found out when the next month's rent was due. I feel this hike is unfair and I cannot afford it. My rental agreement was renewed 6 months ago with no mention of such an increase. Can he legally enforce this increase? What are my rights as a tenant in this situation?
